# How far can a drone fly?

## Short answer

How far a drone can fly has two different answers: how far it physically can, and how far the law lets it.

Physically, a modern consumer drone is limited by two things, its radio link and its battery. DJI rates the transmission range of its top consumer drones at 10 to 15 km under ideal conditions, and on a single charge a drone can cover a total flight distance of roughly 21 to 41 km before it has to land. Obstacles, interference, and wind cut those figures down in the real world.

Legally, the binding limit is usually much tighter. In the United States, FAA Part 107 and the recreational rules require the pilot to keep the drone within unaided visual line of sight, and most other countries have the same rule. That effectively caps a normal flight at a few hundred meters, the distance at which you can still see the aircraft, no matter how far the radio could reach.
