On January 25, 1979, Robert Nicholas Williams, a 25-year-old factory worker at [Ford Motor Company](/companies/ford-motor.md)'s Michigan Casting Center in Flat Rock, Michigan, was struck and killed by the arm of a robotic transfer vehicle built by Litton Industries. Williams was climbing into a storage rack to retrieve castings manually when a one-ton transfer vehicle crushed him from behind, killing him instantly. His family sued Litton Industries and was awarded 10 million in 1983 (later raised to 15 million), the largest personal injury award in Michigan at the time. This is the first documented human killed by a robot.
