Uber Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) was Uber's autonomous vehicle R&D division, established in 2015 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA. ATG developed self-driving technology using Volvo XC90 platforms and operated test fleets in Pittsburgh, Tempe, San Francisco, and Toronto. In March 2018, an ATG test vehicle struck and killed pedestrian Elaine Herzberg in Tempe, Arizona — the first pedestrian fatality caused by an autonomous vehicle. ATG was acquired by Aurora Innovation in December 2020 for approximately $4 billion.
