VTOL and eVTOL

VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) describes aircraft that can take off, hover and land vertically, so they need no runway. eVTOL is the electrically powered version, typically with many rotors or tilting propellers, and is the basis of most air-taxi and cargo-drone programs. Many drones are small VTOL aircraft; larger fixed-wing VTOL designs combine vertical lift with efficient forward flight.

The distinction matters because certification is the bottleneck. A passenger-carrying eVTOL must earn a type certificate from regulators such as the FAA or EASA before it can fly commercially, and those programs have taken years longer than early timelines promised. Whether an eVTOL is certified, in testing or only announced is the key fact for any claim about air-taxi service.
