Alan H. Shaw

American business executive who served as President and CEO of Norfolk Southern from May 2022 until his termination for cause in September 2024. A 30-year Norfolk Southern veteran, Shaw joined the railroad in 1994 as a cost systems analyst and rose through positions in coal, chemicals, intermodal operations, and marketing before becoming EVP and CMO in 2015.

His CEO tenure was dominated by the February 2023 East Palestine, Ohio derailment — one of the most consequential freight rail accidents in U.S. history — and a subsequent proxy fight. He was fired after a board investigation found an inappropriate relationship with the company's chief legal officer. Holds a BS in aerospace engineering and an MBA in finance from Virginia Tech; CFA charterholder.
