Biren Technology added to US BIS Entity List, cutting off TSMC manufacturing
The US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) added Biren Technology to the Entity List on October 17, 2023, restricting access to advanced semiconductor manufacturing. TSMC subsequently halted production of Biren BR100 chips (7nm CoWoS process). The company was forced to explore SMIC as a domestic manufacturing alternative and pivot strategy amid US-China chip export controls.
