According to a police report obtained via public-records request by 404 Media and made public in September 2024, a semi-autonomous Starship Technologies delivery robot struck a pedestrian employed by Arizona State University on the Tempe campus in approximately September 2023. The report states the robot abruptly changed direction and backed into the woman, knocking her to the ground, and that it subsequently reversed toward her again while she was still on the ground; a responding officer noted she appeared injured and complained of lower back pain.
The report indicates video footage reviewed by police showed no apparent cause for the robot's movement. The company reportedly offered the pedestrian its insurance information and promotional codes following the incident.
