Chris Monroe

American physicist (b. 1965) and Gilhuly Family Presidential Distinguished Professor of ECE and Physics at Duke University. While a postdoc in David Wineland's NIST Ion Storage Group, he led the 1995 team that demonstrated the first quantum logic gate on any physical platform using trapped ions — the practical birth of quantum computing.

He subsequently pioneered ion-trap-on-a-chip, remote entanglement, and quantum teleportation at the University of Michigan and University of Maryland. In 2015 he co-founded IonQ with Jungsang Kim; he served as CEO (2018-2019) and Chief Scientist. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences (2016) and a key architect of the 2018 U.S. National Quantum Initiative Act.
