UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 (SI 2008/1597): GB product-safety law for machinery, including robots

SI 2008/1597 implemented the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC in UK law and, after EU exit, was retained and amended for Great Britain. It sets the essential health and safety requirements, conformity assessment, technical file, declaration of conformity and marking duties for anyone placing machinery on the GB market.

CE marking continues to be accepted in GB alongside UKCA: in August 2023 the government announced indefinite recognition of CE marking for 18 regulations including machinery, legislated through the Product Safety and Metrology etc. (Amendment) Regulations 2024 (SI 2024/696). From 20 January 2027, SI 2026/867 limits the 2008 Regulations to Great Britain, revokes them in Northern Ireland (where the EU Machinery Regulation applies directly), and lets machinery that complies with the EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 and carries CE marking be placed on the GB market; machinery placed on the market before that date under the earlier rules can continue to be made available.

Status: in force (GB). Applicability: humanoids, AMRs, cobots and other powered robots supplied in GB are machinery under these Regulations. HSE research report RR1214 treats these Regulations and PUWER as the two core UK regimes for autonomous mobile robots. Verified on 2026-10-26.
