Calvin-40 at Renault ElectriCity, Douai, France

Headless industrial humanoid from [Wandercraft](/companies/wandercraft), built on the self-balancing dynamic-gait control stack the company spent 12 years developing for medical exoskeletons. Wandercraft says the first unit was assembled in 40 days, which is where the name comes from. It has no head: perception is a waist-mounted RGBD camera, with inertial measurement units in each limb and force sensors under the feet, and it signals its state with LED lights rather than a face.

Wandercraft and [Renault Group](/companies/renault-group) state a carrying capability of 40 to 50 kg, roughly double what Renault says conventional plant robots handle; the one task publicly described in service, two-tire handling at Renault's Douai plant, is reported at about 30 kg. Renault co-developed the robot and took a minority stake in June 2025.

DEPLOY holds Calvin-40 at pilot: Renault describes the Douai unit as being tested, Wandercraft's own site puts first series delivery in H1 2027, and the fleet figures in circulation (10 by end 2026, 350 by end 2027, 12 signed customers) are roadmap and order commitments rather than units at work.

One Calvin-40 works in the wheel workshop at Renault's Douai plant in northern France, the ElectriCity site that builds the Renault 5 E-Tech. Its job is tire handling: picking up and moving wheels, a repetitive lifting task Renault describes as among the most physically punishing on the line.

Renault Group co-developed the robot with Wandercraft rather than buying it off a shelf. Renault defines the functional need, Wandercraft supplies the technical solution, and Renault took a minority stake in the company in June 2025 alongside its Series D. Renault describes the Douai unit as being tested, and independent coverage puts the two-tire task at about 30 kg, below the 40 to 50 kg the two companies state as the robot's capability.

Renault's stated roadmap is about 10 robots running by the end of 2026 and 350 across its French and Spanish factories by the end of 2027. Those are targets, not installed units. DEPLOY records one unit at work here and counts nothing toward the roadmap until it is in service.
