Liquid Robotics Wave Glider autonomous surface vehicles deployed by NOAA's Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) for marine ecosystem health assessment around the main Hawaiian Islands. Three Wave Gliders equipped with winches conduct 24/7 data collection including air temperature, wind, barometric pressure, ocean currents, water temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll-a measurements between 20m and 150m depth. Repeated surveys have mapped ecosystem productivity hotspots and lowspots near each of the main Hawaiian Islands. NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) has also used Wave Gliders since 2011 for Arctic oceanography, CO2 monitoring, and ocean acidification research.
