Insurance & liability
Does homeowners insurance cover a home robot?
Whether the homeowners policy you already own covers a home robot, and what to check before you assume it does.
No insurer has confirmed that a standard homeowners policy covers a home robot. Not as property, and not for the damage it might cause. We read the published policy lines of the major home insurers, and none addresses a home robot either way. That silence is not coverage. Until your own insurer puts it in writing, assume a home robot is neither covered property nor a covered source of liability.
A homeowners policy has two halves that could matter here: personal property, which pays to repair or replace the things you own, and personal liability, which pays when you are legally responsible for hurting someone or damaging their property. A home robot is an expensive, powered, semi-autonomous device that sits in neither box cleanly. No insurer we checked has classified it as scheduled or unscheduled property, and none has said its liability section would answer for what a robot does. High-value and powered items are often exactly what policies limit or exclude, so the safe assumption is that you are not covered until your insurer says otherwise.

What actually exists today
| What people ask about | Status | The reality |
|---|---|---|
| Cover the robot as personal property | Untested | No insurer we checked has confirmed a home robot counts as scheduled or unscheduled personal property. High-value powered items are often the ones policies cap or exclude. |
| Pay for damage the robot causes | Untested | Whether the liability section would answer for harm your robot does is unconfirmed and likely to be contested. None we checked addresses it. |
| A robot rider or endorsement | None | No major home insurer publishes an endorsement written for a home robot. We checked the published product lines of Progressive, State Farm, Allstate, Lemonade, and the rest. |
| Commercial robotics cover instead | Businesses only | Real and mature for companies deploying robots, but it is not part of a homeowners policy and not sold to a household. |
Would your homeowners liability actually pay?
Every homeowners policy includes personal liability for bodily injury and property damage you are legally responsible for. On its face, that could reach a robot you own. Whether it does is the untested part, and here is why it is not a safe assumption.
It exists in every policy
Standard homeowners policies include personal liability cover. On its face, harm you are responsible for could include harm caused by something you own and operate.
Insurers write carve-outs
Policies exclude many powered, mechanical, and business-use risks. An insurer could argue a home robot falls under one. None we checked has said either way.
Who was operating it
If the robot acted on its own software, an insurer may point at the maker rather than you. That is the unsettled liability frontier, covered on the who-pays page.
No insurer has confirmed it
No home insurer we checked has confirmed its liability coverage applies to a home robot. Get the answer from yours in writing before you rely on it.
What would change this
We track this question so you do not have to. Any one of these moves the answer, and each becomes a dated line on this page the week it happens:
- A named home insurer publishes a robot endorsement or a coverage stance.
- A court rules on whether a home robot is covered property or covered liability.
- Insurers price coverage against a claims history, and there is not one yet. Right now the verified record holds zero safety incidents for a home humanoid robot, so no home insurer has the loss data it would need to write a policy.
How we know this
Every claim on this page comes from a primary source, dated and checkable. We do not repeat takes.
If any of this changes, or if you can show us we got something wrong, our corrections process logs the response on the record.
