Does renters insurance cover a home robot?

Whether renters insurance covers a home robot, the extra risk of damaging a place you rent, and what to ask before you count on it.

Untested

No renters policy has been confirmed to cover a home robot. Not as your personal property, and not for the damage it might cause to your unit or to someone else. We read the published renters lines of the major insurers, and none addresses a home robot either way. Renters carry a real extra exposure here: if your robot damages the apartment, your landlord's insurer can come after you. Until your own policy confirms it in writing, assume you are not covered.

Renters insurance covers two things: your personal property inside the unit, and your personal liability if you are responsible for injuring someone or damaging property, including the unit you rent. It does not cover the building itself, which is the landlord's policy. A home robot lands awkwardly across all of this. No insurer we checked has said the robot itself is covered property, or that your liability coverage would answer if the robot damages the apartment or hurts a visitor. And because the building is not yours, a robot that wrecks a wall can trigger your landlord's insurer seeking the cost back from you, which is exactly what your liability section is supposed to blunt, if it applies. That last part is untested.

The renter's extra exposure

A renter carries a risk a homeowner does not: the building belongs to someone else. If your robot damages the unit, the landlord's insurer can seek the cost back from you, and your renters liability coverage is the thing that is supposed to stand in the way. Whether it does for a robot is untested.

Your liability section

It covers damage you cause

Renters liability is designed to answer when you are responsible for injuring someone or damaging property, including the unit you rent. On its face it could reach a robot you own.

The landlord's insurer

It can come after you

If your robot damages the building, the landlord's policy pays the landlord and then can pursue you for the cost. That is when your own liability coverage has to work, if it applies.

The exclusion risk

Powered risks get carved out

Policies exclude many powered and mechanical risks, and an insurer could argue a home robot is one. None we checked has said either way.

Where it stands

No insurer has confirmed it

No renters insurer we checked has confirmed its liability coverage applies to robot-caused damage. Get the answer from yours in writing before you rely on it.

What would change this

We track this question so you do not have to. Any one of these moves the answer, and each becomes a dated line on this page the week it happens:

  • A named insurer publishes a renters robot endorsement or a coverage stance.
  • A court rules on whether renters liability answers for robot-caused damage.
  • Insurers price coverage against a claims history, and there is not one yet. Right now the verified record holds zero safety incidents for a home humanoid robot, so no insurer has the loss data it would need to write a policy.

Common questions

Does renters insurance cover a home robot as property?
No insurer we checked has confirmed it. A home robot is a high-value powered device, and those are often capped or excluded rather than fully covered. Until your policy confirms it in writing, do not assume the robot itself is covered.
What happens if my robot damages the apartment?
Untested, and this is the renter's real exposure. The landlord's insurer can pursue you for the damage, and your renters liability coverage is supposed to answer. No insurer we checked has confirmed it does for robot-caused damage.
Is renters insurance different from homeowners here?
The verdict is the same, untested, but the risk is different. A renter does not own the building, so robot damage to the unit brings in the landlord's insurer. A homeowner insures the structure themselves. We keep the two on separate pages for that reason.
What should I ask my insurer?
In writing: is the robot covered as personal property and at what limit, and would the liability section pay if the robot damages the rented unit or injures a visitor. A verbal yes is not coverage.
