Santa Monica judge issues preliminary injunction banning overnight operations at two Waymo Broadway recharging stations
Santa Monica Superior Court Judge Bradley S. Phillips issued a preliminary injunction sought by the City of Santa Monica, barring Waymo from operating its Broadway Lots recharging stations (1222 and 1310 Broadway) between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. The court found the stations constituted a public nuisance due to noise, lights, and traffic disrupting nearby residents, who described conditions as 'mini-Las Vegas' and 'living next door to a spaceship.' Waymo denied the nuisance existed and contended it had hired more staff, implemented software updates to reduce noise, installed light and noise barriers, and modified vehicle behaviors.
The injunction remains in effect pending trial; a status conference is scheduled for Oct. 23, 2026.
