On July 31, 2026 the Cle Elum City Council unanimously passed Ordinance 1733 at a special meeting, an emergency six-month moratorium on development applications for data centers and high-intensity computing facilities. The council also called for an advisory committee to research data centers and advise the city.

The pause followed Blue Fern Development's proposal for a 20 MW data center within its Bullfrog Flats development near Interstate 90. City officials said the moratorium may not stop that project, because the site is covered by an existing development agreement and an application there would be reviewed under the rules already in place.

Cle Elum was the first local government in Kittitas County to adopt such a pause, followed by Kittitas County (August 2026) and Ellensburg (October 2026).
