27-year-old Mikhael Romanenko killed in SoMa chain-reaction crash involving speeding Tesla and stationary Waymo robotaxi
On January 18, 2025, a black Tesla traveling at approximately 98 mph struck multiple vehicles stopped at a red light at the intersection of Sixth and Harrison streets in San Francisco's SoMa neighborhood, causing a chain reaction that damaged seven vehicles. Among the impacted vehicles was an unoccupied, stationary Waymo robotaxi.
Mikhael Romanenko, a 27-year-old software developer, and his dog were killed in the crash; several others sustained injuries. The Tesla driver, Jia Lin Zheng, 66, was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter. The Waymo was stationary at a red light and its autonomous system played no active role in causing the crash, but the robotaxi was part of the crash sequence.
