Zoox issues software recall after robotaxi drove into heavy smoke at emergency fire scene
On June 20, 2026, a Zoox robotaxi encountered heavy smoke obscuring an active emergency fire scene that was not cordoned off with cones; the vehicle braked hard and steered away before stopping, and a Zoox teleoperator reversed it from the scene. Zoox issued a voluntary software recall (NHTSA 26E044000) on July 7, 2026 affecting its 105-vehicle fleet, shipping a software update to detect and respond to heavy smoke at emergency scenes.
No injuries were reported and no passengers were on board. The recall came a week before NHTSA administrator Jonathan Morrison sent a letter warning AV companies to stop interfering with first responders.
