FERC orders the six RTOs and ISOs to justify or reform large-load interconnection rules
On June 18, 2026 FERC issued Section 206 show-cause orders directing each of the six grid operators it regulates (PJM, MISO, SPP, ISO-NE, NYISO and CAISO) and their transmission owners to either justify or reform the tariff terms that govern how data centers and other very large loads interconnect, including flexible, co-located, and behind-the-meter-generation loads. The orders press the operators to create transmission-service options tailored to large flexible loads and to offer interim, non-firm service while network upgrades are built, with responsive tariff filings due within 60 days (Docket RM26-4). ERCOT is not FERC-jurisdictional and is not covered by these orders; Texas is pursuing its own path.
