Scaleway is a French cloud and AI infrastructure operator, founded in 1999 by Xavier Niel as Online SAS and now a majority-owned subsidiary of the Iliad Group. Positioned as Europe's sovereign cloud alternative to the US hyperscalers, it runs its own data centers in the Paris region (DC2 through DC5), plus additional regions in Poland, Italy, and the Netherlands, and has publicly committed to launches in Sweden and Germany. Early anchor tenants are the European foundation-model cohort: Mistral AI trained Mixtral on Nabu, and Kyutai, Hugging Face, and Iliad sibling Free Pro have used the clusters. That posture, sovereign French infrastructure plus a nameable roster of European labs, is how Scaleway differentiates from CoreWeave, Lambda, and the other US-centric GPU clouds.\n\nRecent momentum has come from the public sector. In April 2026 the European Commission selected Scaleway as one of four providers under a 180 million euro sovereign cloud framework for EU institutions, and in July 2026 Airbus signed a multi-year deal to host sensitive industrial and defense workloads on Scaleway. The company remains privately held inside Iliad Group (Euronext Paris parent was taken private by Niel in 2021) and does not disclose standalone revenue since its 2015 filings.
