SenseCore

SenseCore is the AI compute-infrastructure arm of SenseTime, the Hong Kong-listed Chinese computer-vision group founded in 2014 by Tang Xiao'ou and Xu Li. Launched publicly in 2020 alongside the group's flagship AI Data Center (AIDC) in Shanghai's Lingang Special Area, SenseCore was designed to be more than an internal training farm: SenseTime pitched it as a "large device" that would rent out GPU capacity, foundation-model training runs and inference to Chinese enterprises, universities and government customers. It is one of the largest disclosed GPU estates in mainland China, though the group has never published a per-accelerator inventory in the way US neoclouds like CoreWeave do.

Compared with the Western neocloud pack, SenseCore's positioning is unusual. It is captive-plus-merchant: it exists first to train SenseTime's own SenseNova foundation models, and sells surplus capacity as a secondary business. It runs behind China's export-control wall, so its fleet is a mix of Nvidia A100/H800 (pre-restriction), domestically-sourced accelerators, and Nvidia H20-class parts sold into China after the 2023 US controls tightened. SenseTime and its listed subsidiary are also on the US Treasury investment blacklist (since December 2021) and were labeled a "Chinese military company" by the US Department of Defense in December 2024, which effectively fences SenseCore capacity to a domestic customer base.

The commercial story has been rocky. SenseTime's overall revenue mix has shifted sharply toward "Generative AI" (which includes SenseCore rentals and SenseNova API usage) as its legacy Smart City vision business shrank, but the group has remained loss-making, and co-founder Tang Xiao'ou died in December 2023, triggering a leadership reshuffle under CEO Xu Li. Announced capacity additions in Lingang, Shenzhen and Fujian have made SenseCore one of the most visible Chinese "AI factory" brands, but the company has not disclosed a public GPU-hour price sheet the way US neoclouds do.
