Founded in the late 19th century, Wirth specialized in hard-rock tunnel boring machines for mining and infrastructure projects worldwide. The company was acquired by Herrenknecht and its tunneling activities were merged with Herrenknecht's operations. Wirth's TBMs have been used on major projects in Russia, Algeria, Italy, Sardinia, and Brazil.
