Zoox recalls 105 robotaxis after vehicle drove into heavy smoke at active fire scene in Las Vegas
On June 20, 2026, an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi encountered heavy smoke from an active emergency fire scene that was not yet cordoned off with cones in Las Vegas, and drove into it rather than detecting and stopping. Zoox notified NHTSA of the recall on July 8, 2026, and issued a voluntary software recall covering 105 autonomous vehicles produced between April 23 and July 8. A software update enhancing heavy-smoke detection was deployed to all affected vehicles by July 15, 2026.
