Zoox issues software recall after robotaxi drives through heavy smoke at active fire scene in Las Vegas
An unoccupied Zoox robotaxi encountered heavy smoke from an active fire emergency in the Las Vegas area that had not yet been cordoned off with traffic cones. The vehicle entered the scene, braked hard, and attempted to steer away before stopping. Zoox notified NHTSA on June 25, 2026, and issued a voluntary software recall covering 105 vehicles with ADS software produced between April 23 and July 8. A software update was developed to enhance detection of and response to heavy smoke near emergency scenes.
