The Dynamic Robotics Laboratory in Oregon State University's College of Engineering developed the Cassie bipedal robot under robotics professor Jonathan Hurst, with a 16-month, $1 million DARPA grant; Cassie was introduced in 2017 and is produced by OSU spinout Agility Robotics, which Hurst co-founded that year. The lab's lineage runs from ATRIAS, the first robot to reproduce human walking gait dynamics, to Cassie and then Agility's Digit humanoid. In 2021 Cassie, using deep reinforcement learning, ran 5 km untethered on one charge in just over 53 minutes.
