Teraco Data Environments

Teraco Data Environments is Africa's largest carrier-neutral colocation operator, headquartered in Isando, Johannesburg. Founded in 2008 by Tim Parsonson and Lex van Wyk, the company built the continent's first vendor-neutral data center platform and runs NAPAfrica, sub-Saharan Africa's dominant internet exchange (crossing 6 Tbps of peak traffic in late 2025). Its portfolio spans nine facilities across three metros: the Isando and Bredell campuses in Johannesburg (JB1 through JB5, JB7, and the Teleport), CT1 and CT2 in Cape Town, and DB1 in Durban.

Since August 2022, Teraco has been majority-owned by U.S.-listed Digital Realty (NYSE: DLR), which took an initial 55% stake and increased its holding to 77% by mid-2026; Berkshire Partners and Permira retain minority positions. The platform is the primary South African landing zone for the global hyperscalers (Microsoft Azure is a longstanding tenant) and interconnects most of the country's ISPs and content networks through NAPAfrica.

Teraco's build pipeline is heavy: JB7, a 40 MW hyperscale hall on the Isando campus, is under construction on an R8 billion syndicated loan announced in November 2024 and lifts total critical IT load to roughly 228 MW when it comes online. The company signed its first wind PPA in February 2026 and is expanding CT1 in Rondebosch to keep pace with hyperscale demand along the SEACOM/Equiano cable landings.
